What is an AED?
An Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable, life-saving medical device designed to treat people experiencing sudden cardiac arrest. It works by automatically analysing the patient's heart rhythm and, if a fatal arrhythmia is detected, delivering an electrical shock to help restore a normal heartbeat.
Engineered for use by everyday bystanders as well as medical professionals, modern AEDs provide clear, step-by-step voice and visual prompts to guide the user through the rescue process until emergency services arrive.

What to look for
Look for the green AED sign
Most of our AEDs are kept in yellow or green cabinets on the outside walls of pubs, shops, halls and schools, marked with the green heart and lightning sign. A few are indoors or on fences: check the note beside each one in the list above.
Some cabinets are locked: the 112 dispatcher gives you the code. Once you open the AED, it talks you through every step.
